Islamabad, April 28 — Following the recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, Pakistan finds itself grappling with mounting diplomatic pressure from India. India’s announcement of punitive measures, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty, has left Islamabad in a state of heightened anxiety. In response, Pakistan has turned to international allies, most notably China, seeking support amid escalating tensions.
According to a report by Dawn, Pakistan’s political leadership spent the weekend engaging in urgent diplomatic conversations with multiple nations. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar, and other senior officials reached out to leaders in China, the United Kingdom, and Iran to highlight what they described as India’s unilateral actions and to counter New Delhi’s accusations.
China Stands Firm with PakistanDuring discussions with Chinese officials, Ishaq Dar reportedly emphasized Islamabad’s concerns regarding India’s moves post-Pahalgam attack. China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who is also a member of the Politburo of the Chinese Communist Party, assured Dar that Beijing is closely monitoring the evolving situation and expressed solidarity with Pakistan.
China’s backing comes at a crucial time for Pakistan, especially as fears of a future water crisis loom large due to India’s suspension of the decades-old Indus Waters Treaty — a cornerstone of bilateral cooperation on water sharing.
UK and Iran Call for Peaceful ResolutionIn talks with UK Foreign Secretary David Lammy, Pakistan stressed the potential fallout from India’s actions. Lammy underscored the importance of de-escalation and resolving issues through peaceful means.
Earlier, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif had also contacted Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, seeking Tehran’s diplomatic intervention and drawing attention to the Indus Waters issue. Sharif later met with former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif at Jati Umra to discuss the Pahalgam attack and its aftermath.
Pakistan’s diplomatic outreach signals its deepening concerns as India tightens diplomatic and strategic pressure following the deadly terror incident.
