NEW DELHI: The Bharatiya Janata Party on Friday lashed out at Congress over an AI-generated video mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his late mother Heeraben.
Senior BJP leaders accused Congress of taking a vow to "repeatedly insult" PM Modi's mother.
Union Minister Piyush Goyal attacked the "despondent" Congress, saying the grand old party was creating new records of depravity every day.
"After being repeatedly rejected by the public, a despondent Congress, with a warped mentality, is now set on creating new records of depravity every day," Goyal wrote on X.
BJP IT cell head Amit Malviya also seized on the controversy to target Rahul Gandhi. He claimed that PM Modi's mother was being insulted on Rahul's instructions.
"Previously, the late mother of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi Ji was insulted from the Congress-RJD platform. Now, a video of her is being made to humiliate her," Malviya said.
"This clearly shows that Prime Minister Ji's mother is being insulted on the instructions of Rahul Gandhi. This is the height of Congress's deplorable politics," he added.
BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla also termed Congress as "gaali wali Congress."
"Not Gandhi's Congress, but an Abusive Congress: Insult to the mother; India will not tolerate it," he wrote on X.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Pawan Khera refuted BJP's allegations and claimed that nobody was disrespected.
Khera accused the BJP of trying to use the issue to garner sympathy.
"Where is the disrespect shown to his late mother? Show me one word, one gesture, one signal... anywhere you see disrespect. It is the duty of parents, and their right, to educate their children. She is only educating her child. Now, if the child thinks that it is disrespectful towards him, it is his headache, not mine or yours," Khera said.
"Why does the BJP try to make an issue out of everything and try to generate fake sympathy? There is no sympathy on these things anymore. PM Modi can't do 'touch-me-not' politics. He is in politics and he needs to take everything — even a sense of humour of the opposition — properly. And there is no humour in it, there is 'naseehat' (advice) in this," he added.
The clip, shared on Wednesday, begins with an AI version of PM Modi going to sleep after declaring that the day’s “vote chori” (vote theft) is done. He then dreams of his mother, and the AI version of Heeraben appears.
“First you forced me to stand in long queues during demonetisation and made a reel of washing my feet. Now you are doing politics in Bihar in my name. You are getting banners of my ‘insult’ printed. You are again doing drama in Bihar. How low will you stoop?” she asks before “PM Modi” hurriedly wakes up.
This comes days after the prime minister was abused during a Congress-RJD rally in the poll-bound state, with his mother being mentioned.
He hit back soon after, calling the remarks an insult not only to him but to “every mother, sister, and daughter of the country,” adding that the people of Bihar shared his anguish.
Heeraben Modi passed away in December 2022 at the age of 99.
