JAISALMER: A political row erupted Wednesday after Rajasthan Congress MP Ummedaram Beniwal claimed there was no solid proof that victims of the Pahalgam terrorist attack were identified on the basis of their religion and shot, reports Vimal Bhatia.

“There is no strong evidence to suggest people were selected based on religion, caste, or because someone said ‘Modi should be informed’. This narrative is being pushed without basis. The real issue is that unarmed civilians were killed by a coward enemy country. Entire nation is anguished,” Beniwal said in Barmer.

BJP state president Madan Rathore accused Beniwal of having possible links with terrorists. “How else would he know what happened? Was he present there? He must have terrorist connections. This is treason,” he said. “Congress should expel such people. If not, we will believe they endorse these views.”

Beniwal later said his remarks were misinterpreted.
