BCCI Reportedly Grooms Teen Prodigy Vaibhav Suryavanshi As Next-Gen Star Amid Transition Phase

Send Push

At just 14, Vaibhav Suryavanshi has already built the kind of cricketing résumé most players dream of. Bursting into the IPL with a record-breaking 35-ball century, he followed it up by dominating the U19 tour of England, emerging as the leading run-scorer in the one-day series. His blend of fearless stroke play and consistency has marked him out as one of the most exciting young prospects of Indian cricket.

Now, amid speculation over the ODI futures of stalwarts Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, the BCCI appears to be quietly building the bridge to its next era. Reports suggest that Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been flown to the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence (COE) in Bengaluru for specialised training ahead of India A’s tour of Australia starting September 21.

After returning from England, the teenager first joined a training session with his IPL side Rajasthan Royals before beginning an intensive programme at the COE on August 10. This training, designed to replicate match-specific scenarios, is part of the board’s broader plan to ensure a seamless generational shift in Indian cricket. His childhood coach Manish Ojha says the idea is to identify and prepare promising players one at a time so they are fully equipped for the demands of international cricket.

While Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s exploits in limited-overs cricket have been extraordinary, both in franchise leagues and in age-group internationals, his red-ball game is still a work in progress. In the two longer-format matches during the England tour, he managed 90 runs across four innings.

According to Manish Ojha, his attacking style from the first ball is a major strength in T20s and one-dayers but the challenge is to maintain that level of impact in Tests. He says that the target is to ensure that in ten innings, at least seven or eight are match-defining performances.

In the middle of a shifting era for Indian cricket, Vaibhav Suryavanshi’s journey from teen prodigy to potential international mainstay is being mapped with precision, a sign that the future might already be taking shape.
