As temperatures drop across the UK this autumn, spiders will become more common in homes as they seek shelter and warmth. The critters often come inside through open windows, doors and other small gaps.
The peak time for seeing spiders in our homes is from September until the middle of October. There are a number of methods to stop them from entering, including blocking entrances, using peppermint oil and placing conkers in corners or windowsills. However, there is one slightly less common method that can help deter the critters for a minimum cost.
According to bath and shower specialists at Vidalux.co.uk, the cooler weather and increased indoor humidity make bathrooms the ideal place for spiders seeking shelter. They have outlined a number of cheap and slightly unusual tips to keep spiders out of our homes this autumn.
One of their methods involves using "fake predators." They recommend placing rubber or plastic spiders in visible spots to confuse or scare real spiders away.
Spiders typically avoid areas with competitors to reduce competition for prey resources. A simple plastic spider will force real spiders away from visible spots in our homes.
A warm spring is being blamed for the surge in spiders being spotted in homes across the UK. The higher temperatures increased insect populations and gave spiders more food.
Andy Ellis, bathroom specialist at Vidalux said: "Spiders are naturally drawn to warm, damp spaces, so bathrooms can become a hotspot in autumn.
"Even though most species are harmless, they can be unsettling for homeowners - particularly those with arachnophobia!
"Regularly wiping down surfaces, reducing clutter, and sealing gaps around windows, doors, and pipes can make a big difference in preventing them from taking up residence."
The experts also recommend sealing gaps around windows and doors to prevent spiders from entering. They also urge people to keep their bathroom surfaces dry to deter the critters.
