Barking is one of the most common challenges dog owners face, and it can quickly become frustrating if it happens too often. While barking is natural, many dogs learn to use it to demand attention or get what they want. An expert at the Dogs' Trust has revealed one common habit pet owners have that can exacerbate the situation.
The dog professionals say that shouting or scolding your dog for barking is the wrong way to train them. They shared: "The key to reducing and even preventing barking is to understand why your dog is barking in the first place. When you learn what your dog hopes to gain from barking, you can show them that they can get what they want by behaving in a calmer, quieter way."

The experts at Dogs' Trust warned: "Although their barking may be frustrating, never tell your dog off. Telling them off could make them anxious or confused about you.
"This could make things worse, encouraging them to bark even more in worry or confusion. Some dogs might even see you shouting as you joining in and making noise with them."
Instead, teach your dog calmer ways to communicate. When a dog barks to get a specific response, such as at another dog, it's important to show them that quieter, safer behaviours can achieve the same result.
One useful method is redirection. As dogs cannot bark and sniff at the same time, placing treats on the ground shifts their attention from barking to foraging.
Over time, this consistent approach helps dogs learn that calmly ignoring a trigger, rather than reacting loudly, leads to a more rewarding outcome.
The earlier advice does not work in all scenarios. The expert shared: "If your dog barks at mealtimes, ignore the barking and wait for them to stop before feeding them.
"Plan ahead and distract them by giving them a toy when you know you'll be preparing them a snack. If your dog barks to get you to play with them, ignore them.
"Turn away from your dog or even leave the room and do something else instead. When they are quiet, pick up a toy and invite them to play - a fun game is an excellent reward for being quiet."
To conclude, the expert warns that prevention is key, so try to keep your dog away from triggers. You should also slowly adopt these actions.
If you suddenly ignore your dog's barking, they may bark louder or longer to get your attention. Stay calm and reward them with praise and attention when they are quiet, so they learn that silence brings results but consistency is crucial.
