While the nights are drawing in and there's a faint chill in the air, it doesn't mean it's time to abandon the garden until the spring.
Autumn is an excellent opportunity to revitalise the lawn and clear up any sun-scorched or barbecue-trodden patches, and right now shoppers can get 2.8kg of Pronto Seed Premium Grass Seed for £26.49 from Amazon.
If that's too much (or too little), gardeners can pick up 400g for £7.99, 1.4kg for £13.99, 5.6kg for £44.99, or 7kg for £54.99.
The 2.8kg pack should do the job for most gardens, however, covering 168m² for rejuvenative efforts or 84m² for anyone looking to lay a brand-new lawn.
For those anticipating multiple jobs, who have a front lawn to worry about too, or who would rather have some left in stock, then this 2.8kg pack should tick most lawn boxes. That said, for those looking to re-seed a much larger area, it's probably best to spring for the 7kg option.
Pronto Seed promises quick germination and luscious results, with anywhere between a week and a fortnight being enough to rejuvenate those worn-out patches. The grass itself should be hard-wearing and well-rooted, too, so gardeners can be confident that it will weather the British climate, pet paws, and gentle foot traffic.
For hobbyist gardeners out there with little time on their hands, this low-maintenance grass should also stand up to the odd lapse in tender loving care too. By the time spring rolls around, even those who've laid their seed in September and left it to grow should have plenty to mow.
Each pack is sealed for freshness and has a two to three-year viability window, but for best results, check the 'Sow By Year End' date on the pack to ensure the seed is laid when it's at its best, the brand says.
Other options for gardeners are the MOOWY Power Lawn Fast-Growing Grass Seed (50 m²) from B&Q for £13.99. This product is only available online and says it is winter hard, and a 'premiere league quality seed'. Elsewhere, Argos has Miracle-Gro Professional Super Seed Lawn Seed - 2kg - for £14. This product says it has the "ultimate" three-in-one blend of seed, feed and soil enricher, and that it helps create "thicker, greener lawns that are tough so the lawn can cope with lots of activity for you to enjoy with family, friends and pets."
The Pronto seed has won plenty of fans on Amazon, with 4.2 out of 5 stars averaged across 23,229 reviews and 60% of those are five-star write-ups. "I had originally decided to use lawn rolls to create an instant garden effect, however obtaining rolls had become a challenge," began one five-star appraisal. "On reading the information provided for this product and the fact that a customer service helpline was provided, I decided to give this a try. I can honestly say this seed is excellent and at the price it's a fraction of the cost I would have had if I had bought lawn rolls. Exceptionally fast germination, 5 days after sowing, the seed had begun to sprout, within two weeks the lawn was green with some small bare patches, fast forward 4 weeks and the grass is thick and lush. Very easy to sow with excellent results of lush green coloured grass. Excellent value for money in my opinion."
Another five-star review shared: "Used this seed to patch up some worn areas on our lawn, and I'm really impressed. It's easy to spread, and the instructions were clear. Within a couple of weeks, fresh green shoots started popping up, which was lovely to see! The grass feels tough and resilient, which is just what we need with kids running about and our dog Waffle occasionally digging around. It's tailored for the UK climate, so it's held up well through some rainy and sunny days alike. Overall, a great product that made our lawn look healthy and lush again definitely recommended for anyone wanting fast, reliable results."
Yet another five-star review said: "A reliable, fast-acting lawn seed that lives up to its claims. If you want quick results, long-term durability, and compatibility with unpredictable UK weather, Pronto Seed is well worth it. Ideal for new lawns, patch fixes, or seasonal overseeding."
There were some issues noted: "Only issue was that the box was damaged (either in the warehouse or during packing) and was put in a bag so grass seed had escaped - not a major issue though," said one four-star appraisal. "Can tell it's a different colour to our existing grass but then, as the new turf is also a different colour, we don't care!"
Another four-star review noted that it took a couple of attempts to get the desired results. "The 1st time we used these the seeds didn't take so we tried again, this time putting netting over the seeds to prevent birds and our pets walking on them," they said. "We only seeded a small area, but with plenty of watering every evening the seeds have taken, but not as well as we'd have liked."
