Corona Cases Rising: 4 Deaths Reported Including Delhi, 203 New Infections in 24 Hours

The spread of COVID-19 is showing signs of increase, with 203 new cases reported across India in the last 24 hours. The Union Health Ministry confirmed four deaths during this period—one each in Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Maharashtra, and Kerala.

• In Delhi, a 22-year-old woman with tuberculosis and respiratory infection succumbed to the virus.

• Tamil Nadu recorded the death of a 25-year-old man suffering from bronchial asthma and kidney injury.

• Maharashtra reported a 44-year-old fatality.

• Kerala also witnessed one death due to COVID-19.

Currently, India has 3,961 active COVID-19 cases. Over the past day, 370 patients recovered. This year, 32 deaths have been recorded so far. Most new cases are mild and are being managed at home, prompting health officials to urge people not to panic.

Precautions and Preparedness

In response to rising cases, several states and union territories have issued advisories to hospitals to prepare for patient care by ensuring adequate beds, oxygen supply, antibiotics, and medicines.

Cause of Rise: Omicron Sub-Variants

The Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) revealed that the increase is linked to Omicron sub-variants—LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and NB.1.8.1—with the first three being more widespread. The WHO continues to monitor some of these sub-variants closely through May 2025.
