Man uses bin bag and string solution to keep wasps away from his home

Wasps are a common summer problem as they frequently seem to bother humans. But, if you aren't a fan of resorting to chemicals to get rid of these black and yellow space invaders, there's a crafty DIY solution that might make these bugs think twice about setting up home in your garden or house.

The method was highlighted by TikTok user , who regularly shares handy tips and advice for improving your gardens. He said that the natural wasp deterrent could be made in seconds with nothing more than a black plastic bag and some string.

He said: "Wasps will go around your home and garden looking for places to make nests, and they are incredibly territorial." He added: "If they see a nest that exists already, they won't make one anywhere near."

So, to trick any potential unwanted houseguests, stuff the black bag into a shape that resembles a wasp nest (shown in the video below) and secure it with some string. Ish showed that he hung his 'wasp nest' from a tree branch in his garden, adding: "It may not be the most aesthetically pleasing, but if a wasp sees this, it should think it's another nest and will stay away."

People responded in the comments that they planned on trying this trick to keep the pests away. One said: "Think I'll be doing this today. I'm not above gaslighting some wasps!"

Another added: "What a great idea, I'll definitely be trying this! A third asked: "I’ve heard of this before but I thought it had to be a brown paper bag so it was closer to an actual hive/nest?" Ish responded: "It’s more the shape and how it hangs. But, you can use burlap sacks too in order to replicate the colour."

Why do wasps come out more in the summer?

Wasps become more active in the summer because it's their breeding and nesting season. From the spring, queen wasps emerge from hibernation and worker wasps build nests and search for food during the warmer months.

They also become more noticeable in late summer as they actively search for sweet substances. This makes human food and drink a prime target, and wasps don't seem to care that they're invading your territory.

When will wasps naturally go away?

As the cools in late summer, wasp colonies start to decline. The queen wasp will eventually shelter in the nest and hibernate, becoming the sole survivor of the harsh winter.

Wasp activity usually peaks around August and September. You'll notice a major decline from October onwards, , before the life cycle starts again from about April.

If you have a wasp nest in your house, it's best to consult a professional pest control service. It is rarely advised that people get rid of wasp nests on their own, especially if the nest is especially large, high up, or in a difficult-to-reach location.
