Emmerdale Robert Sugden returns to destroy John - with crucial comment to Aaron

There was a jaw-dropping return on on Wednesday evening, as headed back to the ITV soap in a wedding twist.

Actor for the first time in six years, having left the show for good in 2019. Robert was sent to prison and he's been there ever since, while actor Ryan quit the role after five years.

But now he's back, while exact details surrounding his return are still yet to be fully explained. Thursday's episode will pick up from the epic moment Robert gatecrashed his ex Aaron Dingle's wedding to new flame, and Robert's half-brother, John Sugden.

Just as it looked as though the wedding was finally underway after some hiccups, including Aidan Moore falling back into a coma and the lake possibly being dredged, drama struck once more. John and Aaron seemed ready to say their vows and get married, only for someone to interrupt proceedings.

Just as John declared it was time to say their vows, Robert had other ideas and stormed into the venue. Attendees were stunned, looking around and watching on as Robert stepped in and stared at his ex-husband Aaron.

But no one was more shocked than Aaron who was openmouthed, staring at Robert before saying his name. Clearly questioning what he was doing there, he was left reeling at the arrival of his former partner.

Robert then said to him in a rather telling comment: "Hello Aaron. Miss me?" Aaron shook his head with tears starting to form, clearly angry and reeling over what was unfolding.

The whole time, John watched Robert in shock clearly rattled by the arrival of Aaron's first love. With that the Robert return was confirmed after weeks of speculation, and it seems whatever the reason, he could be there to destroy John.

For Robert to return now of all times to interrupt the wedding, it could mean either he doesn't want Aaron marrying the villain or perhaps he wants a reunion with him. Then there is the theory that Robert is another of John's nightmares.

It would certainly explain him being in the village given there's been no suggestion he's being released, while of course Robert is currently not in contact with any family. John has been experiencing nightmares that might destroy his wedding all week, so could Robert be the latest one?

After all we've seen John be so jealous of Aaron's past with Robert, constantly bringing it up and even accusing Aaron of still having feelings for him. So either way if it's a dream or reality, Robert has headed back to destroy John and his hopes for the future with Aaron.

If Robert really has returned, he's clearly keen on stopping the wedding perhaps due to his own feelings or maybe he doesn't like John. If it's a nightmare, then John's jealousy over Robert is clearly eating away at him and could destroy his happiness, with dream Robert being there to ruin everything.

It was reported weeks ago in a storyline leak that Robert would be back on the soap for a limited time. After a publication leaked the storyline that bosses had gone to huge measures to keep under wraps, the cast were left unimpressed while details remained a secret until now.

Fans had been after a number of hints were dropped, with fans hoping Ryan would reprise the role. The theory sharing led to a number of comments suggesting it was only a matter of time before Robert was back in the village.

One fan said: "Robert is supposed to be coming back so guessing it will be him [who saves Aaron]." Another viewer posted: "Yay go on Robert save the day," as a third added: "It has to be Robert Sugden," in response to who would likely help residents stop John.
