In Sanatan Dharma, mantras are considered very important in the worship of any deity. Different mantras are prescribed for each ritual, such as prayer, bathing, meditation, offerings, etc. One such mantra is the Kshama Yachna Mantra or the Kshama Prarthana Mantra. It is said that at the end of a puja, when we ask God for forgiveness for our mistakes, only then is the puja considered complete.
Why do we ask for forgiveness?
Often, while performing puja, we make many mistakes, knowingly or unknowingly, such as a mistake in pronunciation, a flaw in the ritual, or sometimes our attention wanders elsewhere. Therefore, after the puja is complete, we ask God for forgiveness. There is a special mantra for this.
Kshama Yachna Mantra
Aawahanam na janami na janami immersionam,
Poojaam chaiva na janami kshamasva Parameshwara.
"Mantraless, actionless, devotionless, Janardana,
Yatpujitam Maya Dev Paripoorna Tadastu Me."
This mantra means, "O Lord! I neither know how to invoke You nor how to worship You properly. I do not know the method of worshipping You. I am a person without mantras, actionless, and devotionless. Please accept my worship. If I have made any mistakes during this time, please forgive me."
The Importance of Apologizing
The purpose behind asking for forgiveness is clear: whenever we worship God, we knowingly or unknowingly commit some shortcoming or mistake; therefore, we must ask for God's forgiveness after the worship.
Whenever we make a mistake in life, we should immediately apologize, whether to God or to any human being. Asking for forgiveness eliminates ego and maintains love and closeness in relationships.
This is the essence of true devotion and humanity. Therefore, when we ask God for forgiveness at the end of the worship, we do so. It is not only a religious act but also a symbol of humility and introspection.
