Add a new travel essential to your luggage: Expert reveals how a simple tennis ball can ease discomfort on long, tiring flights

Frequent flyers know the drill: noise-cancelling headphones, a neck pillow, and compression socks are staples for comfort. Yet, experts suggest many travelers overlook one simple item that could dramatically improve in-flight well-being — a tennis ball. Lightweight, portable, and inexpensive, it may just be the tool your long-haul flights have been missing.

Sitting in cramped airplane seats for hours can lead to stiff muscles, poor circulation, and nagging discomfort. Osteopath and sleep therapist Tracy Hannigan told Metro that a tennis ball can act as a compact, effective massage tool to relieve tension mid-flight. “If you wrap it in a small hand towel, shaped like a sausage, you can control it more easily and it will stay in place,” she advised.

Targeted Relief Anywhere
Rolling the ball gently under thighs, calves, shoulders, or the lower back applies light pressure to tight muscles and encourages blood flow. The technique is discreet enough for economy seating, yet impactful enough to ease prolonged sitting strain. Hannigan also recommends pairing the massage with simple stretches, such as turning the chin toward the armpit to stretch the neck, or crossing one leg over the other while hinging forward slightly to relieve lower back tension.

The tip has gained traction among frequent flyers online. Reddit user Tmckhar shared on r/TravelHacks, “Pack a tennis ball or tension ball in your carry-on. Place it at the base of your spine near your tailbone. I do this when driving long periods and it helps with back pain.”

No special equipment or preparation is needed. The tennis ball is lightweight, easy to pack, and incredibly versatile, making it one of the simplest travel tools for maintaining comfort. Experts say adding this small item to your carry-on could be the secret to arriving at your destination feeling significantly more refreshed.
