TRAI has taken strong action against the various types of online fraud that have been seen for a long time. Now fraudsters will think 10 times. Anil Kumar Lahoti, Chairman of the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, has informed that telecom companies are going to use the '1600' number series. Now if you also get a call from a number starting with 1600, then understand that this call is coming from real banking, financial services, and insurance (BFSI) companies. Talking to ET Telecom, Anil Kumar Lahoti said that this series has been brought especially for transactions and service calls of the banking, financial, and insurance sectors. With this initiative, it will not be possible for fraudsters to introduce themselves as employees of a bank or insurance company. After this, it will be easy for people to understand which call is important and which can be ignored.
Freedom from fraud and cheating
Experts believe that after the use of this number series starts, cases of fraud will decrease. After this, no common citizen will pick up a call from any number that does not start with 1600. Apart from this, even if the call is picked up, the fraudster will not be able to introduce himself as an employee of the bank or insurance company and will not be able to carry out the fraud. Let us tell you that before taking this step, TRAI had held several meetings with telecom service-providing companies and other parties.
What is the status at present?
According to TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti, the series of 1600 numbers has been given to the telecom companies. Banking, financial, and insurance companies are receiving it to use it. TRAI has also asked the organizations regulating this sector to advise the companies under their supervision to adopt this system as soon as possible. Let us tell you that some BFSI companies have started using this series. SBI Card was the first among them, which has also started using this series. With the help of this series, people will be able to easily identify reliable and safe calls.
This is how the work was done.
In 2022, a Joint Committee of Regulators was formed by TRAI. It included representatives from RBI, SEBI, the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority of India (IRDAI), the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA), and the Department of Telecommunications (DoT). It was decided by this committee that such a system would be created for the banking, financial, and insurance (BFSI) sector, which would curb fraudulent calls made using telecom resources. Let us tell you that this decision has been taken under the Telecom Commercial Communication Customer Preference Regulation, 2018. Now as the use of this series increases, it will become easier for everyone to identify important calls from the banking and insurance sector.
